Anti-frizz products for hair extensions: a smoothing serum, leave-in mists, deep conditioning and the wash routine that stops making it worse. Frizz on an extension is hardly ever the weather. It is a surface problem, and surface problems can be fixed.
Hair has an outer layer of overlapping cuticle scales. When they lie flat the strand is smooth and light bounces off it evenly. When they lift, strands stop lying against each other and stand away from the length, which you see as frizz and flyaways.
On extensions the cuticle lifts for two reasons: dryness and wear. Dry because nothing replenishes the hair from above. Worn because it has been roughened by heat, hard detergent, or dry brushing from the root down. A damp British autumn is not causing the frizz, it is revealing it.
So there are two fixes and most people need both. Put moisture back with masks and leave-ins, then lay the surface down, which is the job of the silicone based serum. It fills the roughness so light reflects evenly.
Frizz, in the order worth trying
- Check the shampoo first, because a sulphate detergent undoes everything after it
- Condition on every wash and mask weekly
- Detangle only when the hair has slip, with conditioner in, ends upwards
- Mist the 10 in 1 through damp lengths before drying
- Finish dry hair with a very small amount of serum, ends first, roots never
If the hair is rough rather than fluffy, treat the cause at Dry and Damaged Hair. Technique is covered on Hair Brushes and the wash under Sulphate Free.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my extensions frizzy at the top but not the ends?
That pattern points at friction rather than dryness. Hair near the bonds gets the most brushing and the most rubbing against clothing and pillows. Hold the hair above the attachment point when you brush.
Does silicone damage hair extensions?
No, but it does build up. Silicone sits on the outside of the strand, which is why it smooths so well. Use a small amount and make sure your regular wash clears it.
Will an anti-frizz serum work on curly extensions?
It can weigh a curl down and flatten the pattern, so it is not the first thing to reach for. Curly textures do better with a leave-in mist and a defining product.
My extensions frizz as soon as it rains. Fixable?
Largely, yes. Humidity only swells hair whose cuticle is already lifted, so the long term answer is moisture and a smoother surface. Short term, serum on the ends and hair tied back helps.
On a curly set the answer is a different routine, not a stronger serum: Curly Hair Products.
