Curly hair products for extensions: a deep curly remedy mask, a strong hold defining gel, a curling creme, a mango leave-in mist and the cushioned brush that goes with them. WAVE supplies curl patterns from 2A right through to 4C, and this shelf keeps them looking like patterns.

A curly extension is not a straight one in a different shape. Oil runs along a straight shaft and stops at the first bend, so the tighter the pattern the less moisture reaches the ends. With no scalp oil to start with, a 4B set is the thirstiest hair anyone wears.

Brushing is the second difference and causes most complaints. Curly extensions are detangled wet, with conditioner in, then left alone. Dry brushing a coil pulls the clump apart and returns volume and frizz where the pattern used to be.

Third, curl uses up length. A 4C set hangs noticeably shorter than a straight set at the same measurement, which is better said before a fitting than after.

The routine, in order

  • Wash with a sulphate free shampoo at the scalp
  • Deep condition once or twice a week, five to ten minutes
  • Detangle while the mask is still in, section by section, ends upwards
  • Define on soaking wet hair: gel for tighter patterns, creme for softer waves
  • Air dry or diffuse low, scrunch the cast out, then leave it
  • Refresh between washes with water and the leave-in rather than rewashing

The hair itself is on Curly Hair Extensions, the right tool on Hair Brushes, and the wash routine under Sulphate Free.

Frequently asked questions

Why has my curly extension lost its shape?

Nine times out of ten it has been brushed dry. Detangling a coil without water and conditioner rips the clump open, and the pattern does not reform until the next wash.

How often should curly extensions be washed?

Less often than straight hair. Once or twice a week is plenty, with a water and leave-in refresh in between. Each wash is a detangling event, and that is where curly sets lose hair.

Gel or creme, which one do I need?

Gel for tighter patterns and crisper definition, since it sets a cast you scrunch out once dry. Creme for looser waves, because it holds softly and also smooths when blow drying.

Can I straighten curly extensions?

Yes, with heat protection every time. The hair will not spring back to pattern until it is washed, and ironing hair that is never replaced is cumulative. If a client wants straight most days, a straight set is cheaper.

Matching a curl pattern and a shade at once is harder than either alone. The free colour match service does both from a photo.
