Sulphate free hair care for extensions: a moisturising shampoo that cleans without a sulphate detergent, the conditioner made to match it, both deep masks and the mango leave-in. Together they make a full wash and condition routine for tapes, wefts, nano bonds, K-tips and clip-ins.

A sulphate is a detergent. Sodium lauryl sulphate and its relatives are cheap, they foam generously and they lift oil faster than almost anything else, which is why they are in most supermarket shampoo. On a scalp making fresh oil daily that is fine.

On extension hair the oil does not come back. There is no follicle above a weft or a bonded strand, so whatever conditioning is on the hair is all there is. Strip it every wash and the mid-lengths turn dry and tangly, often within a month of a fitting that looked perfect.

Colour is the other casualty. Toner sits on the outside of the hair and a strong detergent lifts it along with the oil, which is why a cool blonde warms up.

Washing without stripping the hair

  • Brush the length through before the hair goes near water
  • Shampoo at the scalp only, worked in with the pads of your fingers
  • Let the lather rinse down the length instead of piling the hair up
  • Condition mid-lengths and ends, leaving a clear gap at the attachment points
  • Detangle with a wide tooth comb while the conditioner is still in

The two bottles alone are on Shampoo and Conditioner. Weekly treatments under Hair Masks. If the hair is already stripped, work through Dry and Damaged Hair.

Frequently asked questions

Is every product on this page sulphate free?

The moisturising shampoo is the only cleanser here, and it is formulated without sulphates. The conditioner, the two masks and the leave-in are conditioning products, so they contain no cleansing detergent at all.

What does a sulphate actually do to a bond?

Very little directly. The damage is indirect. Sulphates strip the length, dry hair tangles, tangled hair gets brushed harder, and hard brushing at a nano ring or tape tab is what loosens fittings.

Will a sulphate free shampoo still get hair clean?

Yes, it just foams less, and people read lather as cleaning power. Milder surfactants lift scalp oil perfectly well. If the hair still feels coated, shampoo a second time.

Does this matter if I only wear clip-ins?

Less, because clip-ins come out and are washed far less often. It still applies to the hair though: a clip-in set is the same cut human hair with no oil supply.
