Burmese Curly Hair: What It Is, How to Choose It and How to Wear It (UK Guide)

What is Burmese curly hair?

Burmese curly hair is human hair with a tight, defined spiral or coil, usually between 3B and 4C on the curl type chart. The name comes from hair originally sourced from Myanmar (formerly Burma), but today it mainly describes the curl pattern: dense spirals that clump into defined sections and blend with naturally curly hair.

The catch is that "Burmese curly" is not one fixed pattern. One supplier's Burmese is a 3B spiral, another's is a 4C coil. Buy on the name alone and you can end up with hair that sits on top of your own curls rather than blending into them. This guide explains how to choose the right Burmese curl, which method suits you, how much you actually need, and how to look after it.

Key takeaways

  • "Burmese curly" is a trade name, not one fixed curl pattern, so match the curl rather than the label.
  • If you are torn between two patterns, choose the looser one.
  • Tight curls shrink: order one or two lengths longer than the finish you want.
  • Nano bonds suit 3B to 4A curls; weft bundles suit dense 4B to 4C hair.
  • Detangle only under conditioner and never brush it dry.

What does Burmese curly hair look like?

Good Burmese curly hair has three things in common, whatever the exact pattern.

  • Defined spirals. The curls form closed spirals or tight coils, not loose waves.
  • Natural clumping. As it dries, the hair gathers into curl sections on its own, so it reads as dense and defined rather than fluffy.
  • Volume without weight. Because so much of the length goes into the curl, it looks full and bouncy even at lighter weights.

How do you choose the right Burmese curl?

Match the curl pattern, not the name. The simplest rule we give every customer is this: if you are torn between two patterns, choose the looser one. A slightly looser curl can be coiled tighter with product and styling, but a pattern tighter than your own hair will always stand out.

  1. Find your own curl type. Look at your hair after it has washed and dried on its own, with no product. Our curl type guide and hair type chart walk you through it.
  2. Compare spiral width. 3B/4A curls are roughly pencil width or narrower. 4B/4C hair bends in tight zigzags and may barely show a pattern until it is stretched.
  3. Check the shade in curl, not flat. Tight curls read deeper than a flat swatch. Send us a photo through our free colour match service if you are unsure.

Once you know your own pattern, shop it directly: curly 3A to 3C for a defined spiral, or coily and afro 4A to 4C for a tight coil. Both sit inside the wider curly hair extensions range.

What is the difference between Burmese curly and kinky curly?

It depends on the supplier, which is exactly why it causes so much confusion. At WAVE, the terms mean something specific:

  • Burmese Curly 3B/4A is a defined spiral that clumps into visible curl sections.
  • Burmese Curly 4B/4C is our tightest pattern, with sharp zigzag bends that pack a lot of texture into a short drop.
  • Kinky Curly 4B/4A is a dense coil with a rounder shape and a little more spring than the 4B/4C Burmese.

If your hair looks almost pattern free until you stretch it, the 4B/4C Burmese is usually the match. If your coils hold a visible, rounded shape, kinky curly often blends better. You can compare them all in our coily and curly weft bundles.

Should you choose Burmese curly nano bonds or bundles?

Both give a natural result. The right one depends on your curl type and how you like to wear your hair.

  • Nano bonds are individual strands fitted with tiny silicone-lined rings, with no heat and no glue. The curl hides the bonds completely, and because they are fitted strand by strand, they are ideal if you want to add length or volume while still wearing your own curls out.
  • Weft bundles are a continuous weft sewn in, fitted as a braidless weave or with microrings. They suit dense type 4 hair, fuller installs and anyone who wants maximum volume.

One honest limit. We do not make Burmese Curly as a tape-in. If tape is the method you want, the closest patterns we make are the 4B/4A Kinky Curly tape-ins and the 4B/4A Deep Wave tape-ins, both in our curly tape in hair extensions range, which almost no other UK supplier stocks.

How much Burmese curly hair do you need?

This is where most people get caught out. Extension length is measured with the hair pulled straight, and a tight spiral uses up a lot of that length as it coils.

  • Expect it to look shorter. A 20 inch 4B/4C set can wear at around 14 inches, and 24 inches often reads closer to shoulder length.
  • Size up. Most customers order one or two lengths above the finish they want. It is why our 3B/4A nano bonds go up to 30 inches.
  • Bundles for a full head. For 4B/4C wefts, plan on three bundles up to 20 inches and four from 22 inches.

Tight curls use up length as they spring up, so order a size or two longer than the finish you want.

How do you care for Burmese curly hair?

The less you handle a tight curl, the better it holds its pattern. Burmese curly hair is human hair with no scalp feeding it, so moisture is everything.

  1. Wash every one to two weeks with a sulphate free shampoo, in sections. Coily hair dries out faster, so over-washing is the bigger risk.
  2. Detangle only under conditioner, with your fingers first and then a wide tooth comb, working from the ends up. Never brush it dry.
  3. Style while soaking wet. Apply curl cream, scrunch, and air dry or diffuse on low heat.
  4. Refresh with water between washes, plus a light leave-in, rather than shampooing again.
  5. Sleep in a satin bonnet to protect the curl clumps.
  6. Go easy on heat. It will press straight, but repeated heat loosens a tight spiral permanently.

Burmese curly hair: frequently asked questions

What is Burmese curly hair?

Burmese curly hair is human hair with a tight, defined spiral or coil, usually between 3B and 4C. The name comes from hair originally sourced from Myanmar, but in the extensions trade it now mainly describes the curl pattern.

Is Burmese hair good quality?

It can be excellent, but quality depends on how the hair is made, not the name. Look for 100% Remy human hair with the cuticles aligned in one direction, and double drawn so the ends are as full as the roots. That is what stops a tight curl tangling.

What is the difference between Burmese curly and kinky curly?

It varies by supplier. At WAVE, Burmese Curly comes as a defined 3B/4A spiral or our tightest 4B/4C coil, while Kinky Curly 4B/4A is a rounder, springier coil. Match the pattern to your own hair rather than the name.

Why is Burmese curly hair so expensive?

Good quality curly human hair is harder to source and slower to process than straight hair, and double drawn hair uses more hair per pack to keep the ends full. Cheap Burmese curly hair is often non-Remy, which tangles and loses its pattern quickly.

Does Burmese curly hair shrink?

Yes. A tight curl takes up length as it coils, so a 20 inch set can wear several inches shorter. Order one or two lengths longer than the finish you want.

Can you straighten Burmese curly hair?

You can, because it is human hair, but we would not make it a habit. Repeated heat loosens a tight spiral permanently. If you want to wear your hair straight regularly, choose a straight or kinky straight texture instead.
