4C Hair: What It Is, How to Care for It and the Extensions That Match

What is 4C hair?

4C hair is the tightest curl pattern on the hair typing chart. The strands form very small, densely packed coils or zig-zags with little visible curl definition until the hair is stretched or styled. It shrinks a lot, often up to 75% of its true length, and it needs plenty of moisture because natural oils struggle to travel down each coil.

It is one of the most common textures among people with Afro hair, and one of the least understood. This guide explains how to tell 4C from 4A and 4B, what 4C hair actually needs day to day, how to protect your length, and how to choose extensions that match your coils instead of fighting them. It is written from a hairdresser's point of view, by a brand that makes genuine kinky curly hair rather than straight hair pressed into a curl.

Key takeaways

  • 4C is the tightest pattern: tiny coils or zig-zags, very little definition and heavy shrinkage.
  • 4C hair is often much longer than it looks. Shrinkage hides the length, it does not mean the hair is not growing.
  • Moisture, gentle detangling and low manipulation do more for 4C length than any single product.
  • Protective styles help, but too much tension at the edges can cause traction hair loss.
  • For extensions, match your coil as well as your colour: kinky curly hair blends with natural 4C, while kinky straight suits 4C hair worn blow-dried.

How do you know if your hair is 4A, 4B or 4C?

Look at a clean, product-free section once it has dried naturally. If you can see small, round, springy coils, you are closer to 4A. Sharp zig-zag bends point to 4B. Very tight coils with almost no visible pattern, and the most shrinkage, point to 4C.

Type What it looks like Shrinkage Closest WAVE texture
4A Small, springy, well defined coils about the width of a crochet needle High Kinky Curly
4B Sharp zig-zag bends rather than round coils, less definition Very high Kinky Curly or Burmese Curly 4B/4C
4C The tightest pattern, densely packed, little definition until stretched Up to 75% Kinky Curly or Burmese Curly 4B/4C, or Kinky Straight if you wear it blow-dried

Most people have more than one pattern on their head, often tighter at the nape and crown. Go with the pattern you see across most of your hair. Our full curl type chart covers every type from 1 to 4C.

What does 4C hair need?

4C hair needs three things above all: water-based moisture, gentle handling and protection from friction. Tight coils make it hard for natural scalp oils to travel down the strand, so the ends dry out first.

  1. Wash gently and not too often. Many people with 4C hair wash every one to two weeks with a sulphate-free shampoo, or alternate with a conditioner wash, so the hair is not stripped.
  2. Detangle wet and well conditioned. Work in sections with plenty of slippery conditioner, using your fingers or a wide-tooth tool, from the ends up to the roots. Never detangle dry 4C hair.
  3. Layer your moisture. Apply a water-based leave-in first, then seal it in with a cream or oil. This is often called the LOC or LCO method.
  4. Deep condition regularly. A rich mask once a week or after every wash keeps coils soft and stronger.
  5. Protect at night. Sleep in a satin or silk bonnet, or on a satin pillowcase, to stop cotton pulling moisture out and roughening the cuticle.

How do you keep your 4C length?

4C hair grows like any other hair. What usually stops it looking longer is breakage at the ends, not slow growth, so the goal is keeping the length you already have.

  • Handle it less. Every comb-through, restyle and tight bun is friction. Styles you can leave for a week or more help.
  • Keep heat low. Regular high heat to stretch 4C hair weakens it. If you love a sleek look, extensions in a smooth texture can give it to you without heat on your own hair.
  • Watch the tension. Braids, ponytails and extensions that pull hard on the hairline can cause traction alopecia, a type of hair loss from repeated pulling. If your edges are thinning, sore or bumpy, loosen your styles. The NHS hair loss guide explains the causes, and you should see your GP about any sudden or patchy hair loss.
  • Trim the ends when they split. Small regular trims stop splits travelling up the strand.

What are the best hair extensions for 4C hair?

The best extensions for 4C hair match your coil and put as little tension as possible on your own hair. For natural 4C, that means kinky curly or tight coily hair, usually fitted as wefts. For 4C worn blow-dried, kinky straight blends best.

Method How it suits 4C hair Best texture
Weft bundles (sew-in or braided base) The most popular choice for 4C. Your hair is braided down and protected, and wefts add length and fullness. Kinky Curly or Burmese Curly 4B/4C
Tape-ins Possible, but tape needs a smooth, flat root to grip, so the root is blow-dried at each fitting. Kinky Curly
Nano bonds Discreet and light, best for 4C hair that is regularly stretched or straightened. Kinky Straight
Clip-ins No commitment and no tension when worn for the day, ideal for 4C hair worn blown out. Kinky Straight

Whatever method you choose, have it fitted by a stylist who works with textured hair, and ask them to keep tension off the hairline. Our guide to whether hair extensions damage your hair covers what to watch for.

How do you match extensions to 4C hair?

Match the coil first, then the shade, then the length. Get the texture right and the rest is easy to blend.

  1. Coil: if you are between two textures, choose the tighter one. Extensions relax slightly with washing, and your own coils shrink up next to them.
  2. Shade: match the ends of your hair, not the roots, in natural light. Our free colour match service will do this for you from a photo.
  3. Length: curly and coily hair is usually measured stretched. Expect the worn length to look shorter, just like your own 4C hair.
  4. Care: treat the extensions like your own coils, with moisture, gentle detangling and a satin bonnet. Our curly extension care guide walks through the routine.

4C hair: frequently asked questions

What does type 4C hair mean?

Type 4C is the tightest curl pattern on the hair typing chart. The coils are very small and densely packed, with little visible definition, and the hair can shrink to around a quarter of its stretched length.

Is 4C the rarest hair type?

No. 4C is one of the most common patterns among people with Afro hair. It can feel rare because mainstream hair brands, including most extension brands, rarely cater for it.

Can 4C hair grow long?

Yes. 4C hair grows at a normal rate, but shrinkage hides much of the length and dry ends break easily. Moisture, gentle handling and low-tension styles help you keep the length you grow.

How do I know if my hair is 4B or 4C?

Let a clean section dry with no product. If you see clear zig-zag bends, it is likely 4B. If the coils are so tight that you can barely see a pattern, and the hair shrinks the most, it is likely 4C.

What hair extensions are best for 4C hair?

Kinky curly or tight coily weft bundles blend best with natural 4C hair. If you usually wear your hair blow-dried or pressed, kinky straight clip-ins or nano bonds match that smoother finish.

Do extensions damage 4C hair?

Not when they are the right weight, fitted without too much tension and removed carefully. Problems usually come from tight braids or heavy hair pulling on the hairline, so ask your stylist to keep your edges free of tension.

Coils that finally match

4C hair deserves extensions that look like it, not straight hair pressed into a curl. Find your pattern, keep your length with moisture and low tension, and match your coil curl for curl. Browse our coily hair extensions, use our colour match service, or find a WAVE stylist near you.
