Almost nobody in the UK makes tape-ins for curly hair. The standard answer from most suppliers is to straighten the client's own hair so a straight tape blends, which works until the client washes it and the two textures separate. These are cut and wefted to a curl pattern, so the tape blends wet, dry and after a wash.
The two patterns
- 3A/3B Deep Wave. A springy wave running into a loose curl. Suits wavy through to curly clients and is the more forgiving of the two to blend.
- 4B/4A Kinky Curly. A dense coil for type 4 hair. This is the one that does not exist elsewhere in the UK trade.
Both are 50g and 100% Remy double drawn human hair, in 60+ shades.
Can you actually put tape-ins in curly hair?
Yes, and it is one of the better options for a curly client, but the fitting rules are different from straight hair.
The tape needs a flat, smooth root. That is the whole job. Curl at the root will lift the tab and shorten how long the set lasts. Blow the root section smooth on a low heat with a nozzle, leave the mid-lengths and ends alone, and sandwich onto that smooth section.
Leave more space between rows than you would on straight hair. Curly hair needs room to expand. Rows packed tight will push the curl outwards and create width instead of length.
Skip the very front on tighter patterns. On 4B and above, keeping the hairline free of tape gives you a natural edge and hides the rows completely.
How long they last on curly hair
Six to eight weeks between maintenance, which is slightly shorter than on straight hair. Curly hair is drier by nature, so the oils and creams that keep it healthy are the same products that break tape bonds down. Keep conditioner and oil off the top two centimetres and you will get the full eight weeks.
Washing
Sulphate free shampoo only, applied at the root and rinsed through rather than scrubbed. Condition mid-length to ends. Dry the roots properly before bed, because damp tape tabs slip. Air dry or diffuse the rest.
