What are the best tape-in hair extensions in the UK?
The best tape-in hair extensions are 100% Remy human hair, double drawn so the ends stay thick, on thin, flexible tabs with a medical-grade adhesive. They come in a close shade and texture match to your own hair, in packs heavy enough for a full result, and can be refitted several times. These checks matter more than the brand name.
Tape-ins range from under £40 a pack online to several hundred pounds, and from the outside they all look similar. This guide shows you what actually separates a set that lasts nine months from one that tangles in three weeks, written from a hairdresser's point of view, so you can judge any brand, including ours.
Key takeaways
- Choose 100% Remy human hair with the cuticles aligned. It is the single biggest factor in how long tape-ins last.
- Double drawn hair keeps the ends as full as the roots; single drawn thins out towards the tips.
- Good tabs are thin, wide and flexible, and replacement tabs should be available so you can refit the same hair.
- Match the texture as well as the shade, especially if your hair is wavy, curly or coily.
- Judge value by cost per month of wear, not price per pack.

What makes a tape-in extension the best?
Seven things decide how a set looks, feels and lasts. Check every one before you buy.
- Remy human hair. Remy means every strand runs root to tip in the same direction, so the cuticles lie flat and do not catch on each other. Non-Remy hair is often coated in silicone to feel soft in the packet, then tangles once that washes off. Our guide to what Remy hair really is explains how to tell.
- Double drawn. Short hairs are removed so the ends are nearly as thick as the roots. Single drawn sets look full at the top and wispy at the bottom.
- The tab. Look for thin, wide, flexible tabs. A wide tab spreads the weight across more of your own hair, which is kinder and more comfortable. Stiff or thick tabs show through and lift at the corners.
- Weight per pack. Brands sell anything from 20g to 100g packs, so price per pack means nothing on its own. Most full heads need 2 to 4 packs of 100g depending on your density and the length you want.
- Texture match. Straight tape-ins on naturally wavy or curly hair need restyling every day to blend. A true texture match blends on its own.
- Shade range and colour help. A wide shade range, plus a colour match service, avoids the most common mistake of all: buying the wrong colour.
- Reusability. Good hair outlasts its adhesive. If the supplier sells replacement tabs, the same set can be refitted at each move up.

Thin, wide tabs and ends almost as full as the roots: two of the quickest quality checks you can make.
How do cheap and premium tape-ins compare?
The differences are mostly invisible in the packet and very visible six weeks later.
| Budget tape-ins | Premium tape-ins | |
|---|---|---|
| Hair | Often non-Remy or mixed, sometimes silicone coated | 100% Remy human hair, cuticles aligned |
| Thickness | Usually single drawn, thin ends | Double drawn, full to the tips |
| Pack weight | Often 20g to 50g, so you need more packs | Usually 50g to 100g |
| Textures | Mostly straight only | Straight, wavy and curly options |
| Lifespan | Often one fitting | Several refits over 6 to 12 months |
| Best for | A one-off event | Wearing extensions long term |
Are expensive tape-in extensions worth it?
If you plan to wear them for more than one fitting, usually yes, because you are paying for the number of refits, not the pack. Work it out as cost per month of wear.
For example, two 100g packs of 20 inch WAVE Luxeline tapes cost £510. Refitted at each six to eight week move up and worn for around nine months, that is roughly £57 a month for the hair. A cheaper set that tangles after one fitting and has to be replaced every couple of months can end up costing more, and looks worse while you wear it. Salon fitting is extra. What are the best tape-in extensions for fine hair?
Tape-ins are one of the best methods for fine hair, because a wide, flat tab spreads the weight instead of pulling on small sections. The key is fewer tabs placed well, not more.
- Choose a length your hair can carry. Very long, heavy sets pull on fine hair. 16 to 20 inches is usually the sweet spot.
- Stay off the temples and hairline, where fine hair is weakest. Our tape-in placement guide shows exactly where each row should sit.
- Be honest about how fine is too fine. If your scalp already shows through your parting, nano bonds hide better than any tape.
Our guide to hair extensions for thin hair compares every method for fine and thinning hair.
What are the best tape-in extensions for curly and textured hair?
The best are tape-ins made in a real curl pattern that matches yours, with a smooth root section where the tabs sit. Most UK suppliers only make tape-ins straight, which means curly clients have to restyle them every day to blend.
WAVE makes tape-ins across straight, wavy and curly patterns, including 3A/3B Deep Wave and 4B/4A Kinky Curly. The one condition is that tape needs a flat surface to grip, so the root has to be blow dried smooth at each fitting. If you wear your roots in their natural curl, wefts or nano bonds will suit you better.

A curly tape-in with a smooth root section: the tab sits flat while the curl blends below it.

Where is the best place to buy tape-in extensions in the UK?
Buy from a supplier that tells you exactly what you are getting and helps you choose. Before you order anywhere, check for:
- Clear specifications: hair type, drawn, weight per pack, lengths and textures, stated plainly.
- Colour matching help, such as a photo match service or a colour ring.
- Replacement tabs and removers sold alongside the hair, so you can refit it.
- Stylist support: tape-ins look best fitted by a trained stylist, so a supplier that can point you to one is a good sign.
Watch for red flags too: "virgin" hair at a very low price, packs with no weight stated, "human hair blend" (which means some synthetic), and no help with shade.
At WAVE, every set is 100% double drawn Remy human hair, you can use our free colour match service before you buy, and you can find a WAVE stylist to fit them.

Best tape-in hair extensions: frequently asked questions
Which brand of tape-in hair extensions is the best?
The best brand is the one that meets the quality checks: 100% Remy human hair, double drawn, thin wide tabs, a close texture and shade match, and replacement tabs for refitting. Compare brands on those points rather than on price or marketing.
Are cheap tape-in extensions worth it?
For a single event, they can be. For wearing long term, cheap sets usually tangle, thin at the ends and cannot be refitted, so they often cost more per month than a premium set that lasts several fittings.
What are the best tape-in extensions for fine hair?
Lightweight, double drawn Remy tape-ins on wide, thin tabs, fitted with fewer tabs and kept away from the hairline. If your scalp already shows through your parting, nano bonds are usually more discreet.
Is Remy or virgin hair better for tape-ins?
Remy describes how the hair is aligned, with cuticles running one way, which is what stops tangling. Virgin means the hair has never been chemically processed, so a coloured or blonde tape-in cannot truly be virgin. Aligned Remy hair is the more important of the two.
Where is the best place to buy tape-in extensions in the UK?
A supplier that states the hair type, drawn, pack weight and textures clearly, offers colour matching, and sells replacement tabs and removers. Buying through or with a trained stylist gives the best finish.
Choose tapes that last
The best tape-in hair extensions are the ones that still look like your own hair at the third refit. Check the hair, the tab, the weight and the match, and the right set pays for itself. Browse our tape-in hair extensions in 60+ shades, use our colour match service, or find a WAVE stylist near you.
